She’d been transported outside, some several hundred feet away from the Adamantine Manor. Just ahead was the archway through which she’d entered The Gildhall and, beyond it, Kwurdla’s Bridge. She couldn’t think of a reason not to leave that same way.

Teleportation, that was some seriously powerful magic. Then again, she’d expected nothing less from an Iorian. If you believed the stories, they’d been the ones who’d taught humans magic in the first place. Or, had it been the Monrainians? She might have paid closer attention to Tahtoh’s history lectures had she known they would become so relevant to her personal life.

Shouts from behind her, near The Gild’s main entrance. More coming from the windows of the Adamantine Manor. The Gildsmen were waking up; it was high time to go.

She jogged through the passageway and found Lonami N’dalte still there, though he was no longer showing off his stationary floating abilities.

“Caused a bit of a ruckus,” he said, slightly out of breath. “Get what you came here for?”

“I hope so,” she said. “Hey, listen, thanks for not ratting on me.”

“How do you know I didn’t?” he said with a wink. “Kidding. I didn’t see anything, ‘Ms. bol-Talanai.’ But if you do get caught and happen to squeal on me, my ghost will haunt you for a thousand years. You think I’m joking.”

“Nah, I believe you.” Glancing back toward the archway, she saw a shadow glide across the tunnel. A flash of white eyes and lightning bolt earrings. She’d recognize that silhouette anywhere.

Alina froze, clutching the Lorestone behind her back.

The dark figure of Baraam stood there, watching her. She couldn’t make out his expression, his body framed from behind by moon- and orb-light. Knowing that it was over—she’d come so far, only to fail—she waited for him to make the first move.

Then he left, headed back the way he’d come, shouting that he’d found nothing.

Lonami gulped. “Wait, are you actually his sister?”

She thumped her fist against the meat of his arm. “It’s been real, man, but I gotta go.”

Lonami nodded and he palmed a stone next to him, saying, “They locked the bridge, but I just hit the manual override.”

“Thank you,” she said, and ran for it.

Octagonal stones rising to meet her feet, her mind raced with questions even as she raced across the bridge. Had Baraam seen her? How could he not have? Why had he let her go? What was the true nature of the Bane? What was that Iorian doing up in the Crystallarium, the dusty old heart of all Raver knowledge?

She leapt off the bridge, sprinting along the exposed path toward the nearby apartment buildings. Flashlights sliced through the darkness ahead. The footfalls and clanking of metal joints—armored men were converging on her position. She threw the hood of her jacket over her head, sliding into an alley.

“What are we lookin’ for, Sarge?” said an amplified voice coming from just around the corner.

The rustle of leather gear. “Suspect is dangerous. Broke into The Gild. Anything that can tangle with wizards is trouble.
